Questions

About tracking plans.

What is a tracking plan?

A tracking plan is a list of the events your product sends to an analytics tool, with the properties each one carries and the question it answers. Agree it before anyone writes tracking code and you avoid a pile of events nobody can interpret.

Why object_action names?

One pattern means anyone can guess an event name and find it in your analytics tool. Lower snake_case avoids duplicates that differ only by capital letters. This tool uses past tense, such as signup_completed. Some vendors recommend present tense instead. Either works if the whole team uses one.

How many events should I track?

Fewer than you think. Start with the events that answer a question you would act on, such as where people drop out of checkout. Add more when a new question needs them.

Is my plan saved anywhere?

Only in your own browser (localStorage). Nothing is sent to a server. Clear your browser data and the plan is gone, so export a copy you want to keep.
